Behind the scenes of Terra Sintropica

Terra Sintropica is a pioneering project based in Mértola, Portugal, founded in 2018 by Marta Cortegano and Antonio Coelho. The initiative focuses on addressing significant environmental and social challenges, such as drought, soil degradation, and rural depopulation. By employing regenerative agricultural practices rooted in syntropy—an approach that mimics natural ecosystems to restore soil health and biodiversity—Terra Sintropica has transformed previously arid landscapes into thriving ecosystems.

An example of their efforts is the Maladinha gardens, which showcase the power of regenerative farming. By cultivating a diverse array of trees, shrubs, and plants in close harmony, the team has significantly improved soil fertility and water retention. This has enabled the production of a variety of organic fruits and vegetables, demonstrating the feasibility and benefits of sustainable farming in the Alentejo region.

PREC (Practical Regeneration and Circularity), another critical component of the initiative, serves as a community hub. Run by local manager Nuno Roxo, PREC operates as a vegan canteen, café, and organic store, providing fresh produce directly from the Maladinha gardens. Beyond its commercial function, PREC plays a vital role in fostering community engagement, offering a space for workshops, shared meals, and discussions on sustainable living.
